Reacquainting myself with the benefits of a mid-morning run during a busy work day

After a long injury break, I’m reacquainting myself with the benefits of a mid-morning run during a busy work day. It’s the best.

First, nothing clears my mind for deep thought like running. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve started my morning 5k stuck on a major work problem only to finish with a clear plan of action.

Second, the endorphin rush from the morning run lasts the whole afternoon. I’ve never quite found the same boost with gym sessions. Sure, there’s also fatigue if I’ve pushed it too hard. But there’s a predictable dopamine hit after a run that makes the afternoon seem full of opportunities instead of obstacles.

Third, a run is an acceptable occasion to wear stupid glasses in public. Mine today are white with speckled green lenses, an ensemble I can’t pull off under any other circumstances.

The injury is still there, but I’m kind of running through it. The upside is worth it.
